04/07 - STILL CORNERS
Dalston Roof Park
THE SEE HEAR CLUB

Still Corners make music that should, by rights, accompany the part of the film where a car drives off a cliff - in fog - while a woman watches - tears streaking down her face - from a window - while a curtain flaps - in a breeze - but what breeze? - and everything is at half speed. So: cinematic is the adjective that could maybe, possibly, be appropriate. Music to listen to with your headphones (not earphones) on, as your heart breaks, gently, and your head is bowed and you want to pull a blanket over your head but your hands are filled with things like French cigarettes and long stemmed roses and glasses of dark red wine and letter you wish you hadn't read.

Tonight Still Corners play in hipster heartland, at Dalston Roof Park in the height of summer. It is cold and wet underfoot, canvas trainers and ballet flats squelch, but the worst of the rain holds its tongue. There is no support act. The band have selected a film, Daytrippers, to follow their set as this evening is part of the SeeHearClub’s series of music and film juxtapositions. Tessa Murray’s only remark on their choice of film is to tease us: Still Corners’ first EP ‘Remember Pepper’ is a reference to Daytrippers. Tessa challenges us to work out how. Before we can figure this out we are led by the ear back into the dreamscape sound Still Corners whirl about us.

Tessa means business; she looks mean tonight, staring into the middle distance. The band don’t look at one another to keep in time. They stare out, like Tessa or they have their heads down, but somehow they still keep to the same shrugging shoulder beat. Bassist Luke Jarvis slowly raises his foot, and lowers it, and raises it again before it hits the ground; the songs are not so much about timing it seems, as about how they feel.
What did bands do before projectors? The visuals Still Corners project onto their backcloth tonight are trippy and twee, a weirdly muted counterpoint to the music. But maybe that’s the secret to Still Corners’ sound and presence: that counterpoint between the dreamlike and the solid. Not so high above the city that we can see across London, but on a rooftop nonetheless, we sit in this liminal space and drink up Still Corners’ set.
